A bursting tester machine measures the pressure needed to rupture packaging material. This value helps engineers judge resistance against compression, handling, and internal stress. The test is especially useful for paper-based packaging, where small fiber changes can affect performance.
It can evaluate kraft paper, coated paper, paperboard, corrugated board, and carton panels. It also suits paper bags, shipping sacks, and laminated paper structures. Some composite sheets can be tested when the layers remain properly bonded. The machine may also assess converted packages, such as sealed pouches, if the fixture and method match the package design. Plastic films and thin metal foils alone usually need different tests. Their stretching behavior can make burst results misleading.
Testing should follow a recognized method and controlled conditioning process. Temperature and humidity matter. A damp corrugated board may show a much lower result than the same board in a dry room. Operators should record sample direction, thickness, surface coating, and failure location. A clean rupture near the center is easier to interpret than a tear caused by a crease or weak seal.
Numbers need judgment. A high burst value does not guarantee strong drop resistance or reliable sealing. I have seen test plans focus too heavily on one result. That is a useful warning. Combine burst data with edge crush, puncture, tensile, and seal-strength testing when the package faces varied distribution conditions.
